The Tuberose – despite having rose in its name, the flower is actually one from the Asparagaceae family. A lovely white sole blooming flower, the Tuberose is one with a bounty of history and significance behind its seemingly simple exterior.

History of Tuberose

The Tuberose originates from Mexico. It was introduced to Europe during the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century and eventually introduced to Asia. During the reign of Louis XIV, it was known to perfume the corridors of Versailles. The King’s gardeners brought in 10,000 tuberose bulbs for the Trianon plantations. As such, the Tuberose gained acclaim for its fragrance and was often seen to be a mark of royalty. Since the 19th century, the production of Tuberose has increased although it is mainly grown for its fragrance in perfumery.

Symbolism and Meaning of Tuberose

For hundreds of years, perfumes have been made using Tuberose. The scent of this flower is one revered by many cultures across time. But the narratives have (fortunately) evolved with time. A woman’s value is shifting away from being dependent on the attraction from a man, and instead centered around one’s own values and achievements.

As such, merely buying a lady a gift any-o-how is no longer going to cut it. A gift without any meaning nor intention is not of value to the lady – if she had wanted the item, she could very well have bought it for herself – why wait around to receive it passively? This understanding helps us to answer the question of whether Singaporean girls like receiving flowers. Reflexively the answer is yes – intrinsically a bouquet of flowers does no harm and will be appreciated for all intended purposes. A personal reflection of what flowers meant to a young working lady

Having me write this article might appear ironic — because I haven’t always had this much interest in flowers.

Unfortunately, growing up as the young unknowing girl that I was, I used to think flowers were for the frivolous and pretentious damsel. While I did acknowledge that flowers were easy on the eyes, my ‘interactions’ with florals and blooms were solely limited to basic sunflower Tumblr phone wallpapers and floral accessories. In my narrow worldview, sending flowers or flower delivery were simply economically unsustainable and its perceived benefits didn’t quite outweigh its costs enough for me to purchase them out of my own will.
